Case Study: Reliable off-grid solutions for remote nature monitoring

Reliable off-grid solutions for remote nature monitoring

Point of departure

Sunwize Power & Battery is a leading provider of remote power solutions, delivering custom, turnkey systems built for reliable operation in off‑grid and mission‑critical environments. Serving a broad range of industries—including oil and gas, environmental monitoring, telecommunications, federal agencies, and traffic infrastructure—they engineer complete power platforms tailored to challenging locations. This project represents an expansion of an existing network in central Idaho, supporting continuous monitoring of fish activity along the region’s rivers.

Challenge

The monitoring sites in central Idaho require continuous, year‑round power to ensure accurate fish activity data, yet heavy winter snowfall makes the locations inaccessible for months at a time. A solar‑only system was not viable—the array size needed to sustain operations through prolonged low‑sunlight periods in winter was impractical for the remote terrain. The customer also ruled out gas‑fired generators due to noise, reliability concerns, and short refueling intervals, all of which conflicted with the sensitive environment and the site’s seasonal inaccessibility. As the network expanded and power demands increased, maintaining a dependable, autonomous power supply became the central challenge.

Solution

To meet the site’s year‑round power demands, Sunwize integrated the EFOY Pro into a hybrid system with solar and battery storage. Having used EFOY technology across security, environmental, and mobile applications, they applied its proven reliability to this remote monitoring network. The fuel cell automatically starts when solar production drops, ensuring continuous operation during winter storms and prolonged low‑light periods. The system was deployed inside the EFOY ProEnergyBox 4060P, an insulated, all‑weather enclosure designed to protect the fuel cell and batteries in temperatures as low as –40°C. The system holds capacity for the fuel cell, up to two batteries, a solar charge controller, and fuel.

Result

With the hybrid system in place, the monitoring network now achieves reliable, uninterrupted operation throughout the year—even in remote locations that become inaccessible during winter. The EFOY addresses the key challenges of footprint limitations, noise sensitivity, seasonal access, and strict uptime requirements, providing a dependable power source where traditional solutions fall short. These conditions make EFOY an ideal fit for applications that demand quiet, autonomous, and continuous off‑grid performance.

  • SustainabilityEFOY Pro Fuel Cells convert methanol into electricity through a single-stage catalytic conversion process, making it one of the cleanest ways of producing electrical energy.
  • Low maintenanceEFOY Fuel Cells offer reliable power with minimal maintenance, a viable alternative to eliminate diesel dependency for remote installations.
  • A complement to wind and solar – When wind and solar components cannot deliver enough power, EFOY Fuel Cells replace the power shortfall.
  • EFOY Cloud – The EFOY Cloud service ensures accurate power system monitoring and control to maintain real-time data transmission in remote environments.
